Mission

Our goal at J&R Quarter Horses is to provide our customers with a quality, versatile horse.  At J&R, we demand our horses be athletic, intelligent, and attractive.  Breeding excellence is a lifetime commitment, and the philosophy of our program focuses on selection through performance.  The fundamental building block of a good horse is form to function.  Form to function is something we take seriously by breeding balance, agility, disposition, and correctness into our horses. This produces an excellent category of animal that will excel in western performance events. We select these characteristics from a solid gene pool that has stood the test of time—the legendary Wiescamp bloodlines.

About Us

J&R Quarter Horses, founded by Jean Handley and Renee' Kuehn-Peters, was established in the fall of 1983 through the purchase of the stallion Zorro Skiphand and two mares. The Covalt family sale in Ogallala, NE, that year introduced them to the "Skipper W" horses they accepted as their line of choice and eventually to Mr. Hank Wiescamp himself. Jean and Renee' first met Hank in 1985 and were nearly dissuaded completely from conducting business with him in their initial visit. His rough demeanor and "no-nonsense" attitude didn't phase the newly paired business partners, though. Their persistance and dedication towards the Wiescamp bloodlines eventually lead to an open friendship between the Master Breeder and J&R. Corresponding letters from Hank to J&R were even addressed to "The Girls from Nebraska."

Beginning with the purchase of the branded stallion Sheik's Elm from Hank in 1986, Jean and Renee' made yearly trips to Hank's in Alamosa, CO. Each trip resulted from the desire to find that next stallion or broodmare that would take J&R Quarter Horses one step closer to its ideal horse. Hank's death in June 1997 resulted in Jean and Renee's final visit to Alamosa for the dispersal sale one year later. The partners continue to rely heavily upon the Wiescamp bloodlines in their breeding program. However, breeding to outside stallions does take place when an opportunity for enhanced structure or performance presents itself. J&R Quarter Horses is a lifetime member of the American Quarter Horse Association and also a member of its Breeder Referral Program.

Jean and Renee' both live on farm and ranch operations in the panhandle of Nebraska. Jean is married to Les Kuehn and has a son, Phillip, and a daughter, Leah. Renee's husband Dennis Peters farms in coalition with Les. Renee' and Dennis also have two children, Jordan and Justine. Jean and Renee's daughters have played an integral part in the promotion of J&R's horses. They are avid showmen and love the horse industry. With their help, J&R's horses contend in the competitive arena on a regular basis.
